Retrospective: Paris - After the mess was over

5.6 Alejandro Gonzales – Fed up
Spring 1994, The MΓ΄le

Alejandro was fed up.
He’s had enough of his band mates’ theories on why Drake bailed on them. The fact was that fucker ran away and left them mid-tour without a singer.
To not lose their gigs, Alejandro had stepped in. He didn't like singing, but Raj played the drums which was already very demanding, and Alejandro would only give Nico a mic if they had a deaf audience.
But Alejandro was a guitarist for god's sake, and singing distracted him from giving his best performance. Not to mention he was a miserable screamer, but thanks to Drake - that fucker - a lot of their songs had shouting in it.
Now they toured with an incredibly limited set list and he with an incredibly bad mood.
At this rate, they would never make it off the B-, or rather, Z-list.
Also his throat hurt - again.

He ordered another beer even though it tasted like piss here.
Why didn't they have any decent beer in France?
The food sucked too.

"Hey! I'm talking to you!" Nico complained once again.
"I don't care what was his problem," Alejandro snapped, "but if we don't find a replacement, I'm done with this shit."
His band and manager looked at him as if it was the first time he threatened to quit.
"I thought you're okay with singing," Raj muttered.
Alejandro wondered if they had ever listened to him.

"We don't have time for a proper audition," Nico stated the obvious, "and it's not as if you can find a good vocalist on every corner." He sighed.
Alejandro rolled his eyes. He had seen street performers sing at least as good as Drake was, if not better.
He could almost hear the kind of voice that would be perfect for their music - dark, velvety, a tad raspy - and it probably could do death growls too.
The chatter stopped and the voice he imagined became clearer.
Except it was real. The owner of that voice was here in this shitty pub.

That guy could hold a tune quite well, though it lacked emotion – okay, but the song sounded incredibly stupid. Alejandro wouldn't hold his lack of enthusiasm against him.

He turned his chair to get a better view on the stage.

The singer wasn't even ugly. On the contrary, he could be considered rather attractive. He looked bored, but he had stage presence.

"We found one right here," Alejandro said and pointed at the stage.
All heads turned there.
"He's good, but... " Nico was hesitant.
"Dude, as if someone would just drop everything and join us," Raj added sceptically.
"You never know if you don't ask," Alejandro pouted. He was disappointed in their lack of enthusiasm.
"He's cute. I'd sign him," Joanne chimed.
Alejandro wasn't sure if her smile was of encouragement or amusement, but he got up and went towards the stage.

"Can you scream sing?" he asked the singer.
The guy stopped and looked at him as if he spoke Chinese.
Shit.
Alejandro forgot they were in mother-fucking France and he probably didn't understand him.
The next few seconds were awkward.

"I never tried," the singer finally replied, and to Alejandro's relief, in English. "Why?"
He didn't even have an accent.
"Look..." Alejandro searched for the best convincing words. Not an easy task, especially when his mind was blurry from too many shitty beers. He should have probably drunk less.
"We're Deep Rift," he pointed towards their table, "America's next great rock band. We're on tour here, but unfortunately, we don't have a vocalist right now. Wanna join?"

The singer looked even more at him as if Alejandro was an alien.
He wondered if Nico was right after all, and almost felt silly.

"You may have seen our name on the festival posters around town."
Probably not. It was tiny and on the bottom, but Alejandro didn't want to give up yet.

Silence. The guy on the guitar (he was mediocre at best) and the one on the keyboard had stopped playing too.
The whole bar was watching them.
Alejandro definitely felt very silly now.

The guitarist muttered something in French to the singer, but he just waved the guitarist off and kept his attention on Alejandro.
"You... want me to be your vocalist?" the singer finally asked, as if he tried to figure out if Alejandro was serious.

"Yeah..." Alejandro thought he had been clear enough. "Well... we'd first have to see if you can fit in our band, but – that is just a formality," he had to convince him now, while he seemed sort of interested. "I am sure you'll be great."

"Okay. When are you rehearsing?"

It was Alejandro who was somewhat dumbfounded by the singer's sudden agreement now, but at least he didn't feel like an idiot anymore. "Uh... Right now... We have to leave for our next gig in a few hours."
That was the catch, and Alejandro prayed it wouldn't drive the singer off again.

But the singer just returned his mic back on the stand and signaled him to wait while leaving for the backstage.

He came back three seconds later, wearing a jacket.
"Ready," he said.
Perfect.
This went better than expected.

They went back to their table. Nico and Raj looked at them as if they weren't sure what happened, and Alejandro felt even more satisfied about his newest acquisition.
"Give me a minute. I’ll make a call," Joanne said. "You probably want to play."
As usual, she was thinking ahead.

"Joanne is our agent, she's getting us a practice room," Alejandro explained to their potential new band member. "And this is Raj, drums, and Nico, synthies and technics. I'm Alejandro, guitar."
He offered his hand.

But before the new guy could reply, someone screeched from the background.
"François!!"
That someone was a short and round man with a very angry, red face.
He shot towards them, spitting and hissing angry French words and possibly venom.
Judging by the two bears flanking the man, Alejandro assumed it was someone considering himself important.

The singer didn't seem to be intimidated though. He just said a few words in French, very calmly, but they upset the little man even more.
The vein on the old man's forehead pulsed dangerously and he inhaled  sharply. And the bears made angrier faces, puffed up and slowly came closer.
"Hey hey..." Alejandro lift his hand apologetically before they would start a brawl. "No need for drama, we're leaving anyway." With or without the new singer, he really didn't need some crazy scene to mess with his tour in the form of a few broken bones. He made some gestures, hoping they would understand him despite the language barrier.
"Don't worry," the new guy said to Alejandro. "He won't cause a scene in his own shit pub."
Thankfully he was right, the bar owner noticed the staring people and lift his hand to stop his goons.
He hissed once more at the singer, but that one just shrugged. After a few seconds of staring contests, the old man gave up and left.
The conversation was done.

"Woah, uhm - FranΓ§ois... ? What was that about?" Nico asked.
"That was the owner. He's just pissed because I quit," the new guy explained. "And it's Francesco. Not François."
Yeah, Alejandro had thought already that this one wasn't French.
"You're not gonna cause any trouble, are you?" Joanne teased. She had just came back from her phone call.
For the first time, the guy showed the hint of a smile. "Depends on the work conditions."
Alejandro chuckled. He didn't worry that Francesco might cause trouble or bail on them.
Their new vocalist had a temper, but his resolve was admirable, it was clear he wanted to pursue something bigger than that bar singer crap. If he truly was what Alejandro expected, Deep Rift would be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone rather sooner than later.

  1. Oh boy. He sure jumped on that train quickly. I get it, once in a lifetime chance and his dream career, but there was basically zero hesitation. Like maybe he's subconsciously been looking for a reason to check out after all. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. But a part of me thinks that he's sort of relieved he can finally fully sabotage his relationship, because subconsciously he kept looking for it to fail. But again, might just be me adding things that aren't there. I guess... good for him?

    1. He did, right? πŸ˜†
It's very likely that he subconsciously would sabotage his relationship again. It wouldn't be the first try, he did this before already!

  2. First, pictures. I’m amazed by your sets as usual! The ambience, the decor and people in the background. So much detail and good! The guy with the back floral tattoo intrigued me! I love his ear piercings. Also, Alejandro looks like a vampire in one of the pictures beside Franny lol. I think you know which one.

Ok, main course. Alejandro’s crass character reminds me of my own when I get mad. No filter whatsover haha! But that’s where our similarities end. I don’t have his whiny-ness, just his lack of grace :P

I didn’t think Fran showed any temper tbh. He was very snappy and quick in his judgement and decisions. Al’s temper is worse than Fran’s hehe! Am so happy for this chapter because Franny is going up up up and away from the darkness.

Funnily enough my first thoughts were that I’d totally despise this chapter because it’s Al’s pov, but I liked it. I think because he seems like a decent human being here and not the player he’d become (or he’s always been like that who knows). He’s pretty passionate about his band too :) Maybe I’ll feel better about S2 when you cast him more. Maybe only. Still pretty down on my list.

Well oops. I'm in a chatty mood today.

    1. I love when you're in a chatty mood πŸ˜†❤

Ha!! I think I forgot to tell you when you asked, but it's mostly Deco sims! They're basically statues of sims that you can place anywhere, and if put in a non-obtrusive angle, they can fill up a place with little effort! 😁 I think I only had a few "real" sims (besides the story ones) that I placed here and there, to give the bar a bit of motion. (the lot is set on "generic", and the doors locked to prevent them from leaving 😏)
Alejandro is much whiter than Franny, and in that red light ofc he'd look like a vampire! πŸ˜†πŸ˜‚ I should probably not dress him in grey anymore so he won't look like a corpse lol

lol omg whiny-ness πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ it fits perfectly!

Eh well, I may have used a wrong word :x Franny's temper is making rash decisions, being snappy and angry quickly, but he's not one to rage loudly. He's def going up! This band thing will def boost his sense of self-value <3

I'm glad you enjoyed this! Yeah, it's hard to believe, but even Al is more than your neighborhood mattress πŸ˜‚ I didn't portray much more of him in S1, have to fix that, and not only for him v.v

  3. I love this. I enjoyed hearing Al's voice. Made me laugh. But wait, how can food suck in France? 😁 Maybe the food wasn't the problem at all. Al probably loves Mexican food. Or he wouldn't enjoy any cousine right then, because he was so pissed.
Franny was a bit too quick to quit his gig at the pub. It was good enough for him for a long time when he was broke after Diego. I'd expect him to show at least some humility and gratitude not leave like this. Especially if he knew zero about these guys and their band. And is he going to perform with them in a few hours? Doesn't he need at least some time to learn their songs? Crazy.
I love Plumbob's theory about him subconsciously looking for an excuse to end the relationship with Mae. He sure forgot quickly about those dreams of the two of them travelling the world together. It was all a lie. His priorities are clear. 😏

    1. Al gives me a good laugh too, whenever I write him 😁
You will be surprised, but the average food you get in France, is quite bad, mediocre at max.... at least that's what I got the few times I was there v.v Al might have complained about any food, though xD

Franny... humble.. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ sry, but not him. He has his sweet sides, but humility is not one of them. Anyway, next one will clear up a few things 🀭

Learning to sing some songs is not so hard, and an average festival concert is about 45mins to about 1h, so have a set list of 10-12 songs and you're more or less good. Even if he doesn't sing all of them on the first concert, he'll learn a lot.

  4. Wait, I forgot to gush about Nico. He has a daddy-like look that makes me wonder if he's the oldest of them all. He's like: "Okay, let's finish this gig quick I have kids to return to and tuck them in."
(on a side note: seeing him in that shirt made me think: Yes, he's my secret fav, it's been confirmed.πŸ™‚ Still waiting to see what his story is.

    1. Nico has a very 70s style to dress, I thought 😏 Hubs calls him already wannabe mafioso πŸ˜†πŸ˜‚ Those shirts are very lovely, I have to agree ❤
Keep telling me theories, and he may get a story too, hehe. Tho I'm considering to leave him story-less as the last resort joker card, I mean, he wouldn't do anything, but also he'd be the only one that never gave you something to be mad about! 😁

  5. So this is how he dumps Mae and moves on. He never thought he was good enough for her and that she was better off without him. Sigh. Poor guy. And touring with a band gets him moving around. I’m sure he was restless.

    1. Yeah, he does indeed think that he's not good enough v.v Though he's still so proud (not to say arrogant), so it's even worse for him... he's a restless soul v.v

  6. I love Franny's impulsive decision making! And Al's complaining, and Nico's shirt ❤️
I agree it was fun getting into Al's head, man I've missed that fool!
Omg, I hope we get to peek inside Franny's head after this one, I'm so curious what he was thinking in that moment and what drove him to agree with so little considering.
It could very well be the sabotage, agreed. Maybe the thought of leaving it all behind is some kind of relief?

    1. Right??? I have missed writing Al too! I was all giddy writing him 😁 I'll be so happy to be back to my much-too-big main cast haha
Franny made a few too many impulsive decisions so far, some had good consequences, and some not so good... we know how this one turns out in a few years!
Anyway, you'll get a peek in his head next chapter!

  7. Lolol! "Alejandro wondered if they had ever listened to him" You can say about Alejandro what you want but certainly not that he would keep his anger secret. They probably HAVE never listened to him! :D
And, um, after that scene with the pub owner, Deep Rift obviously knew who they were getting when hiring Franny. But who could resist a man knowing what he wants and not shying away from a little controlled conflict? Certainly not a rock band aspiring to become one of the great ones! Good voice AND good propaganda, little drama and all. What a catch!

    Replies
    1. Yeah, he was probably nagging them all the time πŸ˜‚ But who'd listen as long as everything goes smooth, right?
Franny's def a catch, drama queen, pretty & nice vocals, too, Al had a good nose when picking him up for their band!

  8. In love with Joanne but just a little. ;) I knew Deep Rift would come back. I'll have someone wear those custom shirts you made in honor of this moment.
