Marriage is bliss

16.4 Sofia Lopez
Summer 1997, Oasis Spring High School

It was the last day of school, and the high school kids were waiting for the bus to take them home. Sara was chatting excitedly to Sofia about what she wanted to do this summer, before she would start working in her father's company in autumn.
Sofia couldn't really pay attention. She was still sad.

"...Sofia? Are you okay?", her friend asked her. She had finally noticed that Sofia hadn't listened to her at all.

"No...", Sofia sighed. "I told you last time when I went to Paolo's?"
"Yes?"

"I did not see him for the whole time since then!" Sofia was about to cry.
"Hey... it's gonna be okay", Sara tried to cheer her up.
But it wouldn't be. She hadn't dared to go over anymore, and he hadn't called her either.

"No, it's not!! I'll never get married in my life!", Sofia really cried now.
Her stupid, awful stepfather would have kept right, after all! She could't stand the thought of it, it was almost worse than never getting married!
"Uhm... But he only said you should go back to school, no? He actually never broke up with you!", Sara tried her best to make her feel better.

"But... I have the feeling that was it."
Sofia was so sure of it, no matter what Sara said could convince her otherwise.

"Oh no... I think he was just worried about you", Sara still tried. "I think he just didn't want to distract you from going to school. Maybe he just wanted you to finish it, and then propose to you!"

That might actually be a possibility. Being engaged in high school was weird, unless you were pregnant. Sofia was not.
"You think so?", she asked hesitantly.
Sara nodded, smiling brightly.

Sofia started to think her friend might be right.
"Yeah... that must be it! Sara, you're a genius!", she exclaimed, having found her good spirits again.
"I will call him when I'm back home!", Sofia decided.

Good times

Spring 1997, Cinema Café

Sofia had managed to stay the whole day in school today. She didn't really follow any of the lectures, but at least she showed some good will. After classes, she went down to the cinema with her best friend Sara.
"Ugh... I cannot wait to get out of school, finally!", she said, eyeing delightfully her vanilla cupcake.
Sara had to laugh. "You're barely there anyhow!"

"Last year, when we cut some classes together, my grades dropped so much my mum got me grounded for a month...", Sara said, still angry about the thought of it.
"Why are you even listening to her?", Sofia asked surprised. She knew Martha was the second wife of Sara's father, and therefore not her real mother.

"Don't say that..." Sara's face changed. "Martha has always treated David and me the same as her own sons. She is like a real mom to me."
Sofia almost felt sorry.

But Sara regained her good mood fast again.
"How was the wedding?", she asked.
Sofia had ravished about it as soon as she received the invitation.

"Oh, Sara... It was beautiful!", Sofia became all dreamy at the memory. "Leroy's girlfriend had a long, white dress, like a real princess! And after the gorgeous dinner, we all danced!"

"I didn't even know that Paolo can dance the waltz!"
It really had been a surprise to her. Sofia didn't know how to, but she had tried to follow his lead, desperately focussing not to step too much on his feet.
"It sounds like a fairy tale...", Sara said, now with a dreamy face, too.

"Oh Sara, I cannot wait to dance on my own wedding...", Sofia sighed.

"Well, I'm sure, soon you'll be a beautiful bride too!", her best friend assured her.

"Uh.... but Paolo sure takes his time with askind me to marry him... I'm almost eighteen now, we're together for one year and eight months now, what is he waiting for?"
She slowly became impatient. Hadn't they dated long enough yet?

Sara looked insecure for a second too now. But then her face lit up.
"Maybe he's just waiting for the right moment... You want a romantic proposal, too, no?", she said.
"Yeah... I guess you're right!", Sofia answered.
It had to be like that, no?

The party is over

3.3 Sofia Lopez
Autumn 1995, Gonzales Residence / Cinema Café

Sofia watched herself in the mirror. She didn't find that she looked any different, but she was also not sure what she should expect. She still couldn't wait to break the news to her best friend, though. The imagination of Sara's most likely envious face made her so excited!

"What is so important to tell me, that we even skipped school!!", Sara was nervous, but her curiousity won her over. "If my mom finds out, she's killing me!"
"Chill, Sara!", Sofia replied, "I did it!"
At first, Sara was confused. "What did you do? Tell your mom, you skipped school??"
As expected, she didn't understand.
"Of course not!! I did the thing... I did the home run with Paolo!!" Sofia burst out.

"You... WHAT???? Oh god... oh god..." Like Sofia imagined, Sara was totally blown away.
"Yeesssss, and it was soooo good!" Almost as good as her best friend's face now!
Sofia felt so superior to her, and maybe even a little bit sorry. Sara hasn't even been kissed yet.
"Ohhh... I thought we both wanted to wait until we get married??", Sara almost cried.
"Why?? It's too good to wait!" Sofia said; and then, "...Are you jealous?"
She had to ask, giggling.
"...Yes!! I want a hot boyfriend, too!", Sara admitted.

Love is in the air

1.5 Sofia Lopez
Summer 1995, The Mudhole

"Ahhhh, again no cute boys in the club...", Sara looked really disappointed.
The Mudhole was the hottest (and actually, only) night club of whole Windenburg, but it seems the town itself didn't had too many hot people (most importantly, boys) to offer...
maybe that was also a reason they had it easy to get in being underaged.

Sofia smirked slyly to her best friend. "Well, I will definitely meet one today!"
She also couldn't hide her excitement.
But of course, Sara didn't understand.
"What? How?", she asked confused.

"I got a boyfriend yesterday! He's already twenty-six, and a real bomb!",
Sofia was just too eager to break the news to Sara, it wasn't easy to play calm the whole day in school!

"TWENTY-SIX??" Sofia fully enjoyd the scare she gave to her bestie.
"Oh my god! Sofia, we're only sixteen! Your mom will kill you!"
As usual, Sara was a chicken! "Relax! She won't know it too soon", Sofia replied, feeling so much more mature than her.

Then she finally could make him out in the crowd. She waved at him: "Here we are!"
"Hey, babe!", Paolo smiled while approaching them.

"Paolo, this is Sara, my best friend!", Sofia introduced them.
Sara giggled uncomfortable: "Hi..."

"Hello there! You're almost as cute as Sofia!", Paolo said, making Sofia's heart skip a beat out of joy.
"Eh.. thanks?" Sara took it less well.
Her loss.

"I missed you babe", Paolo purred at Sofia.
She tried to keep it cool: "We met only yesterday...", before he swept her off her feet.
"Still."

She could totally forget that her friend was still there, standing and not knowing what to do with herself.

Who needs a friend after all, when you could have this...
