S2/01. Trash Talk

1.3 Frank Cage
Spring 1998, Frank's home, Oasis Springs

Linda’s confession bothered Frank all the way home. He wouldn't have thought either Linda or Mae were the type to have an affair with a married man. Both women seemed as if they had a good head on their shoulders and strong principles. Still, he'd have been less surprised if it’d been Mae instead of Linda.

Linda, in particular, never seemed to be a very passionate person- at least not sexually passionate. Yes- she’d had a boyfriend, but they were so sterile with each other, Frank had never clocked them as lovers. He was floored that Linda would ignore all reason and act purely on physical desire.
Or that she had physical desires.
At all.

Frank shook his head, amused at how blind he’d been.
Linda seemed alien sometimes, but she was human, too.
Of course she must have feelings and desires, and Frank would be the last to blame her, God knows he’d made his own mistakes too.

Maybe it was how cold Linda was about the whole thing that bothered him. It made him wonder if he'd ever really known her or if he actually wanted to know her that well.
Frank stopped and took a deep breath.

Maybe he’d taken it worse than it was.
Linda's affair must have been a while ago, probably even before they met, before she dated this Brian guy. Maybe she was just trying to justify it to herself justify it to him.
Damn.
He hadn't held back on her, either. He never would, always spoke his mind.
Of course she would be defensive.
And who knew? Maybe she was ashamed to admit she’d fallen for one of those jerks.
Maybe she’d just made a mistake and learned from it?
Frank hoped that wasn’t wishful thinking.

Diana was already at his house, dressing her daughter for bed before she'd leave for the night shift.
Lana squealed when she saw Frank and wrestled herself out of her mother's grip to jump into his arms.
The little girl was the result of another asshole taking advantage of careless women – like Diana.

But Frank's frustration faded quickly as Lana bounced in his arms and demanded attention.
"Pace ship! Fwuuuuuuuu!" she babbled.

Her mother sighed in discontentment. "Great- now she's all riled up again. You have to stop tossing her all around the moment she sees you."

Frank couldn't help the wide grin spreading on his face. "If you be a good girl now," he said conspiratorially to his niece, "we’ll play space ship when mommy's gone – but shhh," he put his finger on his lips. Lana giggled and covered her mouth with her tiny palms.
Diana dramatically rolled her eyes. "I give up."

A few minutes later, Lana was tucked into bed on the promise of playing with Frank later, but there was no doubt she'd be fast asleep before Diana left.

"What's wrong, did Marcus not get the position?" Diana asked while she poured herself another cup of coffee. She still had half an hour before work.

"What? No, that's still up in the air," Frank said.

Diana sat down and just looked at him. With those inquisitive eyes. Of course she’d noticed his bad mood when he got in. Frank sighed inwardly. It was about time he said something to her too.

"It's shitty how you're all treating Linda," he said, then told her about the scene with Dina.
Diana laughed, it was gloating and ugly, but she stopped quickly when she noticed he didn't find it amusing at all.

"Oh come on," she huffed. "I’m shocked you're still seeing Linda after what her sister did to Rosa. I couldn't believe it when Mae crapped on their friendship like that."

Frank didn’t remember Rosa and Mae ever being friends, she’d always treated the redhead with hostility. Not as if that mattered now.

"I can't believe you’re still hooked up on Rosa's bullshit," he retorted. "Are you that desperate for some gossip?"

Diana glared at him. "What other explanation do you have then?" she shot back.

"I dunno – coincidences do happen, y'know."

And they were back to that discussion again. Frank about had enough.
At last, he noticed a glimmer of doubt in Diana's eyes. She'd hopefully come to her senses soon.

"At least leave Linda out of this mess," he said firmly.

Diana shifted uncomfortably. "Do you like her so much?" she asked, a much softer tone than before. "Aren't you worried she'll do the same to you as Mae did to Herbert?"

"What?"
Now it was Frank's turn to laugh.

"Hey, we're all worried about you," Diana complained.

"Oh man... you all got this wrong." Frank grinned. "Linda and I are just friends, that’s it." Though he wasn't too sure, honestly. If she was only a friend, he probably wouldn't have been so freaked out by her affair. And her cold reasoning. Okay, yes, he’d grown pretty protective of her over time, but he never wanted to date her. And Linda sure hadn’t shown any interest of that kind either.
Frank was content, and it was probably better like that. No need to complicate things.

Diana didn't look very convinced - God knows, maybe his attention for Linda was suspicious after all. "It's not every day you can find someone as excited as her about finding water on Europa," he explained, "and the possibility that it may be much more common in the universe than we thought."

As expected, Diana rolled her eyes and finally dropped the subject.
Frank smirked. No one wanted to talk to nerds except other nerds, because they wouldn't stop talking about nerdy stuff.

"Fine," she said. "Just don't get burned.”
Frank tousled her hair in response.

Diana stayed quiet for a while. She took another sip of coffee, then leaned onto him.
"I'll miss being here," she said.

Right. In just about two weeks she'd move to San Myshuno to continue her work education in the university clinic where she'd have much better opportunities than in the small local hospital she worked now. She was thrilled when she got accepted at first, but the closer the moving date came, the more her excitement cooled down and was overshadowed by worries.

"You won't have time to miss it with all the new stuff you're gonna learn," Frank assured her.

Diana pulled a face.

Frank would miss her too, for sure. He wished she could stay at least another two months, until he had to leave for his own mission to Sixam.

"Hey, you're gonna be fine. You're a big girl now," he said, not hiding the pride in his voice. She'd come so far and gained so much confidence since she'd moved here. He was sure moving back to San Myshuno would not set her back again.

She groaned. "As long as I don't run into them."
"San My is huge," Frank said. "It's unlikely you'll run into the Wolves. If they even still exist. Or into Martin. Or anyone else you don't wanna see."

  1. So Diana was on the trash talk train too? I'm disappoint. And in her arguments she still doesn't present a valid point why they're all taking it on Linda who had nothing to do with the failure of both marriages.
    Who are the Wolves?

    1. Yes she was 😔 She might not have participated much actively, but ofc she was on Rosa's side. Rosa is a good friend of hers, like everyone else in the neighbourhood, so Diana would stick to Rosa's side loyally. Even if it was the wrong one.
And it may not have been v clear, but the trash talk towards Linda is not only bc of Mae- but ofc it was noticeable that Linda and Frank got along *very* well, and everyone is worried she's the same as they think of Mae, that Linda may hurt Frank in the end.
You will learn about the Wolves sooner or later 😄

  2. Yeah, that's right, Frank; don't pretend you're not a NERD. (bc u r obvi, kekeke 😈)
I was so so eager to hear Frank's thoughts on the Linda confession, and here is my delicious delivery!
Never thought Linda even *had* sex parts, did you, boo?
It's always the nerdy ones, Frank my boy 😏

In all seriousness tho, I'm shipping this so hard rn, don't break my heart!
I'm glad that walk home chilled his anger, cleared his head, gave him some perspective (and reasons to hope).

I also enjoyed hearing him come to Linda's defense to Diana. And seeing him with Lana, aaahhh, it might just be my ovaries talking, but I think this man would be an excellent father 😭

Linda and I are just friends... (aren't we?) 👀

"Aren't you worried she'll do the same to you as Mae did to Herbert?"
    Oof! *woman!*
I can't even with you rn Diana, that's some BS right there 😤
Man, those cut-off jean shorts! I miss the 90s :D

    1. Ofc he's a total nerd, even likes Star Toads (if anyone ever remembers that scene at Mae's wedding lol) anyway I'm glad you got your clearance! Yes yes, Frank was totes oblivious, good he learned something new! Tho I bet he'd preferred to learn about it in a different way ehehe

I may or may not break a few hearts along this season, we'll see if yours will be in this too 😆😞

Frank will not stop being reasonable at his sister, of all people, ok and yes, he'd totes make the perfect father (yes my ovaries too !! 😭😭)

Diana is a little naive, and sadly her naivety means also believing everything her lovely great friend that sponsored her a nursery says, screw logic! Good she has Frank to set her head straight!!

Man, those cut-off shorts were a pain with all their corners to smooth- my OCD could just not let them be! But yes. I knew she has to wear them before I opened CAS 😁❤

  3. Oh wow. I never would’ve guessed that Frank wasn’t romantically interested in Linda at this stage (yet). The way he came to her defense when the rest of his clique outcasted her. I blame it on his idolising her to the point that he didn’t think of the possibility that this is a woman, not a greek goddess statue of perfection. Then again, he did get to know her while she was unavailable. That might’ve stuck too. Please get her out of your ‘unavailable’ box and put it in ‘pursue’, Frank. Thanks.

They were so sterile with each other? Does that mean Frank deems himself more passionate, more touchy-feely? Ah. Of course. He calls Linda cold because his warm-bloodedness can’t comprehend the rationality that is Linda. Heh. So that begs the next question. What kind of lover will Frank be, eh? Not really a question. It’s pretty telling here. And maybe we’ll have answers to this question much sooner with Frank reasoning away Linda’s ‘affair’ with his principles. But you can’t stop my mind from wandering. :p

:( Nerd problems. I wanted Frank to continue talking about water in Europa and why is it important and what implications it has. Why did you roll your eyes Diana!? Let him continue! Especially if you’re a medic student. You must also feel a sense of exuberance when someone else besides you knows what schistosomiasis is and you can immediately dive into the complications of your patient’s treatments!

Oh dear. Maybe San M will be a good place for Diana. Get her away from all the small-minded gossip and realise the world is much bigger than the possibility of two people having an affair *eyeroll* and that actions are a contagious disease *eyeroll*. But there’s a saying that “You can take the girl outta the country, but you can’t take the country outta the girl.” Hopefully Diana will squash this statement.

Who is Mark again? xD And I’m excited. Mae, Fran, Al, Diana and Tristan in San M? JUICYYYYYYY!

    1. right? 😏 we're just too used already that when a male and a female cis/het character meet in a story, there *must* be the romance! ;)
Ofc he did find her attractive at first, or he'd not have talked to her in the club, but she never really responded to his flirting (much more subtle than "can I have your private number *smirk* XD) and then she got quite quickly together with Brian, so he quickly dismissed it. Also, all that distracting nerd talk 😏
      he may reconsider now ehehe

We know Linda's and Brian's little liaison was not v passionate, and esp Linda would not be v PDA in public, so for Frank who's much more open it appeared sterile xD

Ehehe I love that you're interested in the nerd talk 😁 at least some later discussions may be less boring to you than I thought they'd be for most readers ahaha
Diana is in training to become a nurse, ofc she has to learn a lot of sciency stuff too, sort of, but for her it is more a means to do her job which is taking care of sick people and that's what she really enjoys.

Diana originally is from San My, same as Frank + Leroy, but she *is* a little naive. She still has a lot to learn v.v

We have not met Mark (yet 😏😏) and yeah, "juicy" it will be with all of them in SM! 😋

    2. I agree. It came somewhat as a surprise that Frank hadn't been thinking about Linda in any romantic way up to this point. I also agree that Diana is somewhat annoyingly dismissive and too judgemental in this chapter. One would have expected better from her after she made a one huge mess out of her own life by being irresponsible. But I don't see anyone in this town shame talking her. 😏

    3. As I said, he found her attractive at first, but before they could become close enough so he'd really fall for her, she started dating Brian- and both the fact that she had a boyfriend and how they acted with each other, was enough to prevent Frank to even get the idea that he'd like to date her.

As for Diana... 😫 She's a sweet girl, but also a gregarious animal. She'll stick with her friends -> "your enemy is my enemy" style
And that's also the whole difference why she never was shunned or shame talked, but Mae & Linda are.
Diana would have heard a "how could you be so stupid!" here and there after she admitted she got pregnant, but she was one of the herd (+sister of long-time established Frank) and therefore everyone supported her. Mae on the other hand, was only there for a short time, and then betrayed the herd itself by supposedly snatching Rosa's husband, and Linda was always sort of the weirdo that occasionally tags along, an outsider.

  4. I laughed so much at Frank thinking of Linda as passionate about only science and that her relationship with her boyfriend seemed sterile even as he's falling for her. What does that say about you Frankster? Lol. Well, I do want to see them together at some point. And hopefully it will awaken BOTH of their libidos. :) So I'm excited to see the next installment.... :) Will Frank get over his jealousy enough to continue to protect Linda from the gossip hounds?

    1. Frank has always defended Linda more or less, romance or not, it did not matter, but until this evening he was not aware that maybe he'd have to speak up more firmly.
Anyway, libidos *will* awaken this season, *everywhere* muahhahaha

  5. Yay, a Frank chapter! Moar of these plz, thank you!

I like how reasonable he is. He obviously just saw Linda crashing from the pedestal he placed her on, and he's still able to think about it rationally and sympathise with her about what may have drawn her to seeing a married man in the first place. But I suppose he is a scientist, so it makes sense he would be able to do that. And you know, he's awesome.

Also, my hot take on the was or wasn't Frank interested in Linda romantically up till now (because I personally never trust what characters are saying, even when they're saying it to themselves) is that when they first met, obviously he noticed she was attractive, but didn't actually think much of it. He seems pretty comfortable with who he is, so he doesn't really need the validation of every hot chick being into him. So I don't think there was initially much to it, but once he did see they had a lot in common and that they can hold a conversation that he couldn't have with one if his friends, he did subconsciously develop feelings on her. I don't think he's necessarily aware of it at this point, but you bet I do think that on some subconscious level, he did hope that he'd be the one to actually bring out a more animalistic side of her. That's why the affair stings, because some other dude already did, at least so it appears. Oh and moral code and stuff :D

Now the above is purely speculation of course, and as I say I don't think it's something Frank personally even consciously realises. BUT the fact it is now coming to the forefront of his conscious mind and he's consciously thinking about Linda's libido means he might be consciously coming into the right mindframe. Like I said in my comment on the last chapter, while these all seem like obstacles on the surface, I feel like all of this is in fact crucial to actually bringing them together. If their existing dynamic wasn't challenged, I don't really see either of them trying to redefine their relationship, after all.

Other than that, Lana is the adorablest toddler ever, guess Al (or "Brian" heh) is good for something after all.

I too am disappointed that Diana got on the middle school hype train, but she is still pretty young, and is very busy with her daughter and her job, so she probably doesn't have time to give it enough thought to make her own opinion about the situation, so she just adopts her friends' one. Also, she's moving to San Myshuno, eh? Verrryy interresting...

Also, Frank is going to Sixam in two months? :O Dang, watch him and Linda finally have a romantic breakthrough just as he's about to go in a few weeks' time... *glares at Candy*

    1. Ha! Another Frank fan 😁 ngl, I'm one too LOL

Not sure if one could say he put her on a pedestal, but he always has perceived her as the goody-two-shoes that plays by the rules. You're quite spot on with him not pushing too hard to win Linda over, he never gave too much thought about it. Also, you're quite spot on that this revelation forced both of them to redefine what they're thinking about the other - yes, Linda too, and if it didn't happen they might have just orbit each other forever, going on with their lives as they are now. If this obstacle will actually bring them into a romantic kind of relationship, is another question xD

Lana is absolutely lovely, at least something good came out of Al, right? 😏😏
Imagine Frank finding out she's the daughter of the same man that Linda had the affair with... conceived at approximately the same time too 🤣

Diana did not give it much thought, she's pretty loyal to her friends who have been very supportive of her so far, so she's following in whatever craze is going on 😔 yes, she's going to San My too 😏

Kekeke 😈 you'd think I'd make it easy for them? XD

Oh, and you're also better off not believing what my characters are saying, I love me some unreliable narrators and ofc characters lying to each other occasionally too 😁
