Retrospective: Paris - How things happened

3.8. Mae West - Awkward
Fall 1993, Mae's apartment

When they came back to the apartment, Francesco went straight to the couch to sleep. Mae offered her bed, but he declined. He didn't even take a blanket.
She wasn't sleepy, so went over to the kitchen, picked up a bagel and took a bite, but she wasn't really hungry also, so she put it down.
What the hell just had happened?
Mae didn't really know what to do. Her head was spinning, and she didn't know if it was still from the alcohol, or because of her confusion. It was full of thoughts, but none she could clearly grasp. She needed to do something, so she went to the shower.

But wait, now suddenly it mattered that he was here, too, unlike yesterday morning, when everything was still different between them. But he was already asleep, and she could hide and change behind the shower curtain, even if he woke up. Thinking of him looking at her naked, sent a shiver down her spine and she vigorously wiped the image off her mind before it became too wild.
There had never been anything like this between them.
EVER.
They were friends, there was never any attraction between them, and despite a slight crush she might have had before they talked - honestly, he did look good - it disappeared completely when she started to know him better and they became friends. And she never had the feeling he wanted to be more than friends, either.
He was gay, after all.
Satisfied that at least this was somewhat clear, she tried to understand how could have happened, what clearly did happen.

He had kissed her.
Just a lips-only kiss, nothing mind-blowing, but still - mind-blowing.

And while it felt completely out of place, and even wrong, it also felt so... right. Like it was just natural to happen. And she almost wondered why they hadn't kissed already before, but maybe they did, but no, that was nonsense, she would have remembered this, she was sure that -
"Are you mad at me?", Francesco asked.
Mae dropped her sandwich, next to the bagel she had started to eat before.

"I thought you were asleep", she said.
He shook his head.
He looked miserable, and she felt like it was her fault.
"You're upset", he said.
Mae picked up her sandwich again, turned it once in her hands and dropped it again.
"I'm fine", she lied. "And not mad at you."
"What's wrong then?", he asked. "Talk to me."
Mae wasn't sure what to do. She was too afraid to make everything more complicated than it was.

She sat down next to him.
Being so close to him again, made her heart beat a little faster. She wasn't drunk anymore, the shower had taken care of the rest of it, but the kiss had left an impression she probably would never get rid of anymore. Carefully she looked at him.

Nope, not a good idea. She almost could feel him kiss her again, not that he even tried, but the memory was still too fresh. And she was mad at herself for feeling all those feelings, that suddenly came out of nowhere, just because of one. Meaningless. Kiss.
He was still waiting for her to talk, so she pulled herself together and took a deep breath.

"That kiss... Was that because you had another flashback?", she tried to sound casual. It was the only explanation that made sense to her.
He gave her a confused look.
"What? No. I'm not so crazy to constantly mix up where I am or with who..."
No, those feelings didn't come out suddenly, Mae started to understand. They had always been there, they were the sole reason she wanted to fight for him, and protect him. With every look he gave her, every word they spoke, and every touch they exchanged, her feelings for him had become stronger and stronger, even now.
And that kiss was just the last drop that brought them to light.

"Oh - I didn't mean that... just...", she stuttered. "I know you're not into girls, so... it couldn't be because it's me, I get that."After all, it never was because it was her. Not for Roy, not for Marc, Jake, Daniel, Mirco, Jean, Marthe, or all those other people whose names she already had forgotten. And the least of all, for Francesco.
But this time it hurt.
Francesco made a few attempts to say something, but he struggled.

"Can we just forget that? And go back to normal?", he said finally.
It hurt.
Mae sighed. That would probably be the best.
"Yeah", she agreed. There was no use talking about this. It was too awkward already.
"Right." Talking wouldn't make anything better.
"Just go back to normal." She tried to smile, if only those stupid tears would stop falling.
She knew she couldn't have expected anything else. She had to get up, do something - maybe make a coffee, before she'd say something stupid that could ruin their friendship forever, like -
"I love you", it slipped out.

Those few seconds of silence that followed were deafening.

  1. I like how self-aware she now is in Franny's presence, while just a few days ago she was running around him in her undies.
I'm not sure who to feel sorry for more in this situation. Mae is so confused, sinking into the pool of self-pity, while Franny is doing his best to uncomplicate the things by offering Mae the easy way out, "Let's forget it happened at all."
Keeping the fact that he's a bi to himself suggests he has no intention to get involved with her romantically. Not that I blamed him, she's a trouble.

    1. Oh yes, everything has changed for her now, that she's aware of her feelings! xD

Mae is not the only one that's confused, so is Franny, but he's better at hiding it, so she doesn't notice. He's worried that she's mad at him for taking the liberty to kiss her in an unfit moment. He only sees that she's avoiding him and draws his conclusions, and "Let's forget this happened" is not only an easy way out for her, but also for himself, because he's afraid he lost her trust and build a wall between them.

Keeping the fact that he's bi has the same reason. He doesn't want to make it awkward between them living in that tiny one-room apartment together. He's convinced she's only helping him because she feels sorry for him and wants to be a good friend, not more.

  2. Oh no...she thinks she’s allowed herself to fall in love with him and he’s unavailable. But he didn’t correct her which makes me wonder....or is,this a huge cliffhanger and they will kiss again and more? She was friends with him first which is probably why it’s different. The others were all just a good time.

    1. Cliffhanger it is, no matter the outcome ;)
You're right, the others were just good time. But for Franny she has feelings.

  3. The first thing that came to me mind is the same thing Mal just said, first she is running around in her undies like it was nothing and now everything changed. Was it because she thought he was gay so it was fine at that point but it isn't now.

She even seems like she doesn't get the fact that he might be bi sexual. It was almost like she didn't even know there was such a thing.

I hate to tell this to both of them but there is no way to forget this happened and go back to normal. Impossible at this point even if they don't act on it. Even more impossible with that last line that she just blurted out. Which of course they can't forget that happened either. I'm also questioning if she really means that she is in love or that she is just infatuated with that kiss.

    1. Oh yes, he was gay, just a friend, not interested in her anyway. That's why it was okay. But now she's too aware of him, and showing her body became something sexual which it wasn't before.

It could also be that she tries to convince herself that him being gay is the reason he's not interested in her because a simple rejection would hurt too much.

They both won't be able to forget this. Both are too much invested in each other. And Mae has kissed already enough people, a simple kiss wouldn't throw her off balance so much if she didn't really have feelings, no matter how hot the other would be. Make things awkward, yes, but it wouldn't make her believe she's in love if she wasn't.

  4. We just gotta anxiously wait for bisexual to become a mainstream phrase (have I already said that? I guess I'm passionate for Fran to get the word that works for him!) Mae definitely ruined everything but otherwise they'd both be keeping it bottled up and probably continue to have weird episodes like last chapter.

    Also boobies.

    1. Tbh I have no idea when the term became commonly used. When I checked it was around for quite a while before NBHT even started, but I haven't found much more.
(hint: I might need some help here xD)

      Yes, boobies <3

  5. Hahaha. Literally a chapter called Awkward. Well, things have changed and they can't go back to the way they were with Mae being so carefree and careless at least around Franco. Even if that's what he wants. Franco really rocks the red sweatshirt look.

    1. And here I was cursing myself for picking red for him because it clashes with Mae's couch x.x
But red really fits him well.

  6. Oh crap! Did she just confess love?? Mae! Darling! We ALL love Franny but...sigh
She's just so pure and lacking guile, I sincerely hope that doesn't cause her grief one day!

  7. Maladi said under one of the last chapters that Mae DID make herself sound like a slut and honestly, she's been right. "After all, it never was because it was her. Not for Roy, not for Marc, Jake, Daniel, Mirco, Jean, Marthe, or [...]" It's probably because she believes it herself. The more often you're told something about yourself, the more you tend to accept it as the truth even if it slowly destroys you. It was that way for Franny and now we realize it's the same way for Mae as well. And if we're honest, many stories have an element of truth on which they rely. I don't say Mae would not be too naive or too fast to pick up men but she's surely not the only one to be held accountable (and after all, the same behavior is socially accepted for men!)

    1. She surely gets around, and she does enjoy it, except she doesn't like the judgement that comes with it.
She's also still too young and not self-confident enough yet to really be above that, though she feels the double standard and tries to defy it.

  8. Oh oops Mae. Yes poor girl I can see her pov. She's been trying to find a place to call her own and ends up falling into each and every arm extended to her that promised her of affection and security and solace and all that we ask for in a secure relationship. So she's constantly falling and falling and her reputation gets sullied more and more and in the end who cares, doesn't matter anymore.

But now it matters. Because this one is deep. This one is secure, comfortable, loving, kind, and compassionate and she didn't need to sell herself for it. And that's why it slipped out. To me, this is her last stand to make it real. To make that feeling of of a secure dependable rshp between her and Fran to be reliable, dependable and something to call her own.

OH SHIT FRAN I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO CRUSH HER. PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG IN THE NEXT CHAPTER.

    1. Omg you have written this so beautifully 😢 that's exactly what she needs. Someone that cares for her, and Franny did, and far more than she ever expected someone could!

And for some reason I have to think about a SUPLEX now 😂😂
