Retrospective: Paris - How we met

2.3. Francesco De la Cruz - Invitation
Fall 1993, Mae's apartment

"Uh, it's a bit small, but sufficient", Mae said, when she entered her appartement with Francesco behind her. It was actually not only small, but tiny.

"Oh dang. I forgot something", she cried out suddenly, turning around, almost leaving already, but stopping abruptly on the way. "I gotta go down to the dépanneur before they close too."

"Uh – if you'd like to shower, now is a good time", she added, pointing towards the pink dotted curtain next to the bar.

"I'll be back in like 15 minutes", she added, while dropping a fresh towel on the bar. She didn't even let him reply, but just rushed though the door.

After hesitating for a few seconds, Francesco needed only five minutes. The hot shower was refreshing, but he still felt a bit uncomfortable spending the night here. He had no problem staying at Diego's or Suzette's place, even for a long time, but Mae was just a school girl that apparently just had enough place for herself. And she was so careless. He could have been god knows who, and she had invited him over just like that.
Francesco tried to push his worries aside. No matter what, he still preferred to take advantage of her naivety instead of sleeping on the street again. This part of the town was much less safe than where he had stayed the last time when he was homeless.

Mae opened the door with so much force, that he almost jumped. "Got it!", she cried out.

"And they even had peanut butter! Soooo lucky!", she went on, wrapping an apron around herself while dropping a small bag on the counter and taking out some kitchen tools of the counter.
Francesco was confused. "You're not really cooking now, aren't you..."
It was more a statement than a question.
"Huh?", she held on for a second. "Well, I still have to, for homework", she continued then, turning back to the kitchen supplies and food.

Watching Mae preparing and mix up a bunch of ingredients was quite entertaining, so Francesco moved over to the bar to have a better look. "It looks so easy when you're doing this", he said. He usually was quite clumsy in the kitchen, when he had to help his mother at home.

"Uh...", Mae hesitated a bit. "I had a lot of time to practice when I cooked for my family." She smiled warmly at the thought of them, then pointed over to the photos standing in the corner on the countertop.

One showed a group of four, a middle aged man and woman and two teenaged girls with red hair. On the second were the two girls again, but older. It was made more recently. Mae was smiling brightly, while the older girl, most likely her sister, looked a bit more shy.
"My mom was very sad after my dad died... so I thought food would cheer her up", Mae continued to chatter.
Francesco didn't really know what to say. He felt sorry for her, but Mae apparently didn't expect any reply.

"And Linda – that's my sister – I mean, she's really smart, like, she skipped grades in middle school, and high school, and got a scholar ship without even asking for it – now she's about to finish her master in botanical chemistry in Newcrest. Well, she's really smart, and sweet, but – Ugh! She's so impractical! She tried once to make pancakes for breakfast. She measured everything like, to the grain! I swear she would've counted the sugar grains if she could. I bet she even knows how many grains make an ounce..." Mae paused for a second, looking as if she was thinking if she knew it herself. "I had a hard time teaching her to loosen up a little... Now she makes awesome pancakes", she continued her monologue.

Francesco realized he was smiling. Mae's chattering was funny. While she kept talking, he thought of his own family. He was wondering how they were doing. When he left five years ago after finishing high school, he didn't give them any address or phone number. And he hadn't contacted them by himself ever.

He couldn't help but still feel mad at them for opposing his relationship with Diego. He knew now, that the relationship wasn't worth it, but it wasn't only because of Diego. He felt like they had rejected him, and it still hurt.

The noise of the plate Mae dropped in front of him pulled him out of his ponderings.
"Try this", she said. It looked delicious, and smelled so, too. Francesco just realized how hungry he was. "What's that?", he asked.
"Homemade gnocchi with parmesan sauce", she replied, with a hint of pride in her voice.
Francesco hesitated. He hadn't expect to get food.
"Come on, I need to know if I can cook this tomorrow, without embarrassing myself", Mae insisted.

He took a small bite, while Mae watched him anxiously. "How is it? Do you like it?"
He nodded.

"Uh, I'm so glad!", she sighed. It looked like she had kept her breath the whole time.

"Eat up", she smiled.
"Thanks", he murmured, barely audible for himself. Her smile was contagious.

  1. It's going to be nice for him not to be alert all the time for a change like he had to with Suzette and Diego. Mae is safe to be around. I'm glad he's feeling uncomfortable for taking up her offer though. It shows he's still a very decent and humble person despite what he had to endure from those two vultures.
Mae is the Queen of the kitchen, huh? For a second I imagined Tony wearing the apron when he's cooking and it gave me giggles. And by the sound of it Linda and Kellie would make great friends and terrible cooks. Linda would count salt grains and Kellie would measure the thickness of steaks. XD

    1. Yes, Mae has a talent to make people feel comfortable around her. She's friendly and candid. And Franco might have quite a few flaws, but deep down he's a good and caring person. And headstrong. It would take a lot more than those two to ruin him.

When I saw I have that apron, I had to put it on her! :D Still sad I didn't find the frilly heart apron, but this one might fit her better, haha. Tony should definitely try that one! ;)
Linda and Kellie have indeed so much in common! Though Linda is quite in touch with her feminine side. Still, she's also so clueless about love xD

  2. Ahh! Mae's apartment! It maybe small (slash tiny), but it's also THE CUTEST!! :O
I'm feeling a degree of relief that Francesco has a safe place to bunk down, and I think it's cute how eager Mae is to feed him.
Good thing he's a nice guy and not some serial killer, Mae! xD
(Lucked out on that one, didn't she?)

    1. I'm glad you like it! I had fun decorating it c: You can see the whole appartement on the house tours.
Mae still feels like she has to take care of everyone. It's not easy to get that habit off xD
And yes, she might have just doged a bullet! She might have invited Michel Fourniret instead. Though that one wasn't half as pretty as Franco, so mayb not xD

  3. One thing I do have to say about Franco he really is a survivor. Not many people could handle that much and not lose their sanity. He had so many bad experiences with Diego, the drugs, Suzette, being homeless and now we learn he even had trouble with his parents rejecting him. Its no wonder he looked a bit withdrawn while Mae was being so caring and friendly with him. So far Franco has only seen the worst in people so it would make perfect sense that he would be a little cautious around someone new. He even mentioned the fact that she didn't know anything about him and even called her naive for inviting him into her apartment. I'm sure if Mae keeps being friendly with him, he will slowly let his guard down. Feeding him and creating a friendly atmosphere is probably the best way to break the ice.

When I seen that apron on Mae I was listening to Bohemian Rhapsody and I did a double take on the apron. Until I seen the words "Of the kitchen" I thought it was Queen the band. LOL

    1. Franco is quite a strong personality. And yes, he learned to mistrust first, especially someone he doesn't know.
And yes, feeding someone is the easiest way to their heart ;)

Lol! First when I tried the aprons I thought the same! :D

  4. I loved that whole scene and how Mae was so innocently capturing his affection just by being herself. And he was so respectful of her and sweet.

    1. Mae is something he hadn't encountered for a while. She's just plain nice, without expecting anything in return. He's not used to that, so he rather holds back.

  5. Okay but that shower out in the open is PEAK cramped apartment living (you really did make it feel cozy yet cramped...not like Franco actually minds with everything to look at...)

  6. Oh this is so nice and relaxing. Fran is really lucky. Mae is a bit clueless as to how much help she's giving him but its endearing. It's a good time to reach out to Fran's family Imo.

    1. Aww yeah! He finally got someone good in his life hehe.
As for his family, he's not gonna reach out... he's one that holds onto grudges v.v

  7. I have such conflicting thoughts about him. On one hand, I realise her bubbly nature and the home comforts she's offering is exactly the kind of lovely grounded environment Fran needs, so I'm happy for him...

But on the other hand I'm dying at the fact how easy she would be to take advantage of in the city, leaving a complete rando in her apartment alone, babbling about her entire life story... if people like Diego and Suzette got the hold of her (which, if she's involving herself with Fran, they very well might), they will plum her over so hard... Let's hope Francesco teaches her a thing or two about looking out for herself a little.

    1. Yeah, she's exactly what he needs now. Let's hope he doesn't drag her into some mess, right? 🤐
