Retrospective: Paris - What we really want

6.2 Francesco De la Cruz
Spring 1995, A street in Paris

It was so ordinary to be back in Paris. Just like being in any other big city Francesco had visited since he'd left almost a year ago. Not as bad as he had expected.
Okay he couldn't even point out what exactly he expected.
Not to be so indifferent, though.
Maybe it was because Mae wasn't here anymore.

Mae, who had kept their agreement and cut off all contact since he'd left.
Francesco had tried to call her countless times, over and over again while he was on his first tour with Deep Rift. At first he'd thought it was just bad timing that she had never picked up.
But sometimes he'd gotten the impression he got through, and just when he started to speak, the phone went back to dial tone.
About a month later, just before the tour ended and he wanted to return to Paris, someone finally had picked up and they'd told him that Mademoiselle West had moved out.
It had been like a punch in the guts.

Francesco had been so mad that he meant so little to her. She must have heard at the bar why he had left, but she hadn't even given him a chance to talk to her, to try and convince her to keep up their relationship.
Then he had been hurt. She knew how worthless he really was. Maybe it had all just been kindness, after all.
Then he was been mad again. He'd finally got the chance to prove himself, but she had apparently written him off already.

He never talked about it, but of course the others had noticed his bad mood.
"Whatever bugs you, how about you use it as inspiration?" Joanne had said.

So he'd drowned his agony in music, furiously wrote many songs of which a few he revised over and over again, until their original meaning was distorted and mutilated beyond recognition and he could bear to sing them.
The management loved them and the fans loved them even more.

But it was not enough. Music helped to release some of the pain, but it did not sedate it, and he'd craved something stronger.

"Try these instead," Alejandro had said and pointed to a pack of cigarettes, in another attempt to keep him away from Heroin.
And so Francesco had numbed his agony with Nicotine until his throat had burned instead of his heart.
It was just a diluted substitute, but it was better than nothing.
He replaced one drug with another to distract himself.

"Are you thinking of her?" Rosa asked. She came out of the store with a small paper bag in her hand.

"Who?" Francesco studied her questioning eyes.
Chocolate brown instead of milky green.

Rosa worked as an assistant in the studio in Oasis Springs where Deep Rift recorded. He'd noticed right away that she liked him when they first met, though she pretended she didn't care that much. But she'd always tried to stay close to him until he slept with her. And she still kept chasing him. Unlike Mae, who always encouraged him to chase his own happiness instead.

"The girl from Paris that broke your heart," Rosa said casually.
Francesco wondered if she was jealous. Unexpectedly, he didn't dislike it.
It didn't feel so bad to be chased.
To be wanted.

"Who told you nonsense like that?" he chuckled and lit another cigarette.
Smoking had become a habit, though the agony had already faded long ago.

"The boys were talking," Rosa said.
Francesco made a mental note to kick "the boys" asses. The past was gone and there was no use to dig it out again; he'd rather look forward.

"I thought about how far I've come since I left from here," he said, not exactly lying. He gently brushed her cheek and on her face appeared the hint of a smile.

He had a new life now, new people to care about, and it was a good life, so much better than what he'd before.
Hell, he had a life.
Others would sacrifice so much more than he had to be in his place.

What did it matter that the only time he truly felt alive was when he was on the stage.
He had no more burning passion left except for music, felt no more head-spinning happiness, but also no more pain.

All the feelings he'd ever had for Mae were tucked away in that locked box, banned from his heart, buried somewhere deep at the bottom of an abyss, together with the memories of Diego, the lawyer Monsieur Armand, Dante, trafficking gangs, rape, kidnappings and mass-murderers.
Not quite forgotten, but they also didn't matter anymore.

Francesco wasn't mad at Mae anymore.

Wherever she was now, he genuinely wished her all the best and hoped life would repay her the kindness she had shown him.

  1. Calling Francesco a turd right off the bat, even though I do feel for him, and can definitely relate to some of his feelings here.
Franny, my love, it was YOU who ended that relationship poorly, you cannot be surprised when Mae is hurt and feeling rejected. It's not a commentary on your state of worth, son!
That said, I understand why he feels it is, unable to look past his own glorious nose. And loving that attention from Rosa, I get that too. It's all very sad between Mae and Franny, a lot of misunderstanding and hurt feelings :(
I still feel like maybe it's a good thing though? Like this time apart was needed to learn some things separately.
I was going to say 'thank goodness they had each other back in Paris', but I wonder if maybe Mae was worse off for it :D

    1. Oh yes, he's such a brat 😣😫 too ready to feel confirmed in his deepest insecurities, instead of thinking logically! Linda would be v disappointed, and not only bc he hurt her sister v.v

They def both need some time apart to learn and grow. Though maybe you could say they're now in a worse position than when they met, and you know it leads to both of them making dumb decisions, like getting married 🙄😏

Well yeah, Mae was def good for Franny, while he was actually the one that dragged her into a lot of mess, like being kidnapped and getting her bff's lover killed, just bc Franny had the wrong ex-boyfriend 😬
Idk if his unconditional love for her made up for that ahaha, well def not when he left.

  2. Poor Fran is such a mess that he still somehow manages to feel abandoned even though it was him that left. But I understand. It's good that he's got his music to help him heal.

Ah yes, no better solid relationship foundation that merely feeling wanted and pursued. Still zero indication of what he may actually like about Rosa herself. Other than the fact that she's been chasing him, but that's hardly a personality trait.

Aww man, that last screenshot though 💔 Even though I don't think even if they did notice each other there, it would have changed much at this point.

    1. Pff yeah he's so absorbed in his own problems he doesn't want to stop and think a bit. v-v

The feeling of being wanted when you feel dropped can make you like one person much more than you normally would.. he probably never really tried to get to know her, she was nice, comfortable to be around, and she really wanted to be with him, and that's enough. He really needs that feeling of being admired now.

That is a good question, if it would have changed anything? It actually might have. Their feelings for each other are still more or less fresh, and they're less trained in denying their feelings for each other than when they actually meet again one year later.
A lot of yelling and blaming each other may have happened 😆

  3. Oh... Your pictures! And that stage <3 So impressive! i love your screenshots this chapter. They're so beautiful!

I have to say. Rosa looks gorgeous here >.> Ok I have to stop fawning over pretty people and pictures!

Why did the phone go back to dial tone? I don't think Mae would've cancelled his calls. Did she put her phone on auto cancel or divert if unknown caller?

He's so messed up. So numb. He's in the same sense like Mae. Arguably Mae's distractions and coping mechanisms are healthier than his now that she's chosen girl friends over sex while he's on nicotine or whatever drugs that are not mentioned here. I wonder if his feelings of worthlessness were carried into S1 or S2. He could've buried it so deeply and his booming music career could've shielded it. But these feelings don't just magically disappear. If he hits a roadblock somewhere in his life these feelings might just come to the surface all over again :(

Oh gosh no wonder Rosa reacted so strongly against Mae.. When I read S1 I thought to myself "Why'd Rosa react like that? Nothing happened." But reading this, okay. Well Rosa has a lot of reasons for reacting the way she did. Especially if she was the one who began the relationship knowing that Franny was hung up on some Paris girl. I feel sorry for her now. Hope she finds happiness in S2 😅

    1. Aww thanks a lot! <3
I was lucky to find those great lots hehe

Hehe! She'll appreciate the compliment! The new skin def suits her xD

Tbh I don't remember landline phones that well, but I know that if you let it ring long enough, they cancelled the call automatically and went back to dial tone, and it made a tiny noise as if someone picked up. He didn't think about that.
Mae never knew that he called, because she didn't go back to Paris after her mother died, until about half a year later.

He's only smoking (at least that!), and tbh that is not a very strong drug. It calms a little, tho it may be more the act of smoking than nicotine itself. Rosa is a whole different level of "coping" tho..
The success he has with Deep Rift is def a major confidence boost, (not that he really needed any- that boy is complicated 😅) but how well it really makes up for the disturbed self-perception is a different story.

And yeah, she has fought hard to get him, and ofc is terrified to lose him again. v.v She'll be back in S2, I hope you'll all enjoy her story 😏😏

  4. First- I have to comment on the cafe you took creating those screenshots. I spent as much time looking as I did reading! ❤️ And that last picture,,it broke my heart. But it was probably way too soon for them to reunite. They need lots of time.

Franny! You poor broken man. He was a mess before and I think what I said last chapter still counts. She showed him love and now that he no longer has it, (his own damn fault) he’s tucked it away and is settling for what he thinks he deserves. Someone that is chasing him because he thinks that means they care. Maybe she does or maybe she just wants a piece of his fame. Not a good foundation for a strong future. So he broke her by leaving and he thinks she avoided him. So sad...

    1. Thank you! I'm really lucky I found those pretty Paris lots :D
You're right - they may have found back together, but it is better they didn't. They need to grow and learn, and they need to do that apart.

Ugh yeah he's terrible! He's settling for Rosa bc she's comfortable for him. She likes him, and he is craving that attention, to make up for the loss (that he caused >.>)
Deep Rift is not v popular yet when they meet, they have a certain niche in their respective music department, tho their popularity there grows quickly. Rosa is genuinely attracted to him. She wants him, and she fights to have him. Not the best foundation either for a good relationship !

  5. Some guys... I didn't think Franny would be one of them, making it all about himself. It was him who left, dammit, so he better quit this self pity nonsense. It's sad to see him make exactly the same mistake Mae did - get married for the wrong reasons.
Nice to see Barbie again, freshly out of the Barbie shop, hehe. Future helicopter wife.
    Nico... ❤️️

    1. I told you he has a v selfish side... 😏
You know that kind of feeling when something goes wrong in a relationship, it is because you weren't good enough in the first place? And it's impossible to go against that feeling with logic, bc that voice keeps telling you you're trash.
And it hurts and it makes him angry, and he can only cope by directing that anger towards Mae.
Yup, Diego and Franny being so embarrassed of what happened did quite a number on Franny lol

You'll see Barbie much more often soon 😆

You know, I'm tempted to sneak him into more screenshots here and there as a treat for you 😏

  6. Dude, nicotine addiction is not funny. In his specific case, when pain is tearing him apart he tries to cover it with another, more bearable/controllable kind of pain. They're both far from being over their suffering.
Mae passing in his back with her friends, like a ghost from the past *cries* It broke my heart completely

    1. Absolutely not, it took me forever to get rid of it 😒
It's def one of the most addictive drugs available. Though to be fair it doesn't kill you as fast as Heroin lol

What can I say, goal achieved 🤭

  7. God bless you Franny, for the ups and downs of band life and not being the person looking over your shoulder constantly (ugh!) Rosa doesn't ignite a fiery rage in me. Just gives me a bad taste. :P

And Franny's drug decisions need to be based off the worse withdrawals. Haven't used either of his vices, I have gone through alcohol withdrawal though and it was "only" bad.

    1. I could not resist putting Mae there 😂 Rosa has her own issues (we know already from S1) and Fran's indifference does not help it.

Well, I did try and quit smoking, and boy- it's a pain. Luckily there's no withdrawals as cold sweat and tremor as it is with Heroin, but I can vouch that a certain amount of stress will always bring back the needs for cigarettes and it is not pretty. Having sort of a substitute (hello, cookies!) does not calm it, but at least gives enough distraction for a while.
