S2/04. Old habits die hard

4.11 Retrospective: Frank Cage
Summer 1990, A military summer camp, Windenburg Island

"What in the world are you doing here?" Frank hissed.
Diana'd almost given him a heart attack when she'd suddenly popped out between the trees in front of him.
She was lucky it was his turn on the watchtower!

She beamed. "I missed you, so I came looking for you" she said, visibly proud of having found him.

"How the hell did you even get here?"

She squinted, a triumphant smile all over her face. "I hitch hiked!"

"Holy shit! You know how dangerous it is?!" One day she'd kill him with a heart attack.

She snickered. "I'm fast, and good at hiding. And chainsaw killers only exist in movies," she professed precociously.

Frank just shook his head over her recklessness.
"What's with Jerry? He doesn't look after you at all anymore?"

Her smile and all her exuberance instantly vanished from her face. "Dad doesn't really get out of his room any more," she mumbled. "Only when he needs new supply."

Fucking hell. Frank had guessed it'd be only a matter of time until their father would fully succumb to his meth addiction, but he'd hoped it'd take him at least until Diana'd finish school. Or at least until Frank graduated and could support her, instead.

"Come," he said, put his arm around her and led her into his tent. "Tonight you sleep here, but tomorrow morning I'll call Leroy and he'll bring you back to San My, okay? You cannot stay here."
Even though he'd loved to keep her here, safe and taken care of.

"Why not? You said it's a summer camp," she crossed her arms and pouted.

"For cadets! We're training here! It's not a fun park!"
It was hard to look at her disappointed face.
"And you promised me you'll finish high school, remember? You won't, if you miss too much of it."

"Yeah," she mumbled.

"When you're done, you can come and live with me."

She sighed.
"It's just still sooo long!" She complained, but at least she smiled a little again.

"Three years will pass faster than you think."
He tousled her hair. "Now be quiet, so they don't notice that you're here."
