Retrospective: Paris - How we met

2.4. Francesco De la Cruz - Safe
Fall 1993, Mae's apartment

Francesco woke up with a start. It was dark, and he had no idea where he was. Instinctively he looked for his belongings. His guitar case and clothes bag were leaning against a wall, next to a window.

He tried to focus and took a deep breath.
Relax.
He wasn't on the streets for a while now. Nor any other dangerous place.
Today he stayed at the red haired girl's place.
Here it was safe.

He looked over to the other side of the room, where Mae was sleeping on her bed. She almost fell out of it and had turned over on her blanket.
She looked funny.

The buzzing noise of the alarm told him that it should be early morning by now. Mae made some unhappy gruntings, rolled over and fell right out of her bed on her face.
Francesco chuckled. It was just too hilarious.

Mae pulled herself up, still more than half asleep.
"Uhh... sorry if I woke you up", she mumbled.
He shook his head, still grinning.

She lurched towards the bathroom. On her way she dropped her pajamas carelessly on the floor.
"Uh - tell me if you want to change - at least ", Francesco muttered, turning his head away, trying to not appear like a creep and being kicked out for that.

"Uh. Sorry. I didn't think it bothers you", Mae replied.
"Eh, no, just..." He dared to shot a look back at her. She had stopped, took a good yawn and seemed not to care at all that she was in her undies.
Were those strawberries?
Maybe Mae was still too sleepy for caring.
"Nevermind," Francesco sighed.

He snuck back under the blanket and heard her closing the bathroom door. Maybe he could still grab an hour of sleep before he had to leave. At least his sisters had needed about that long to get done in the mornings.

When he woke up again, the sun was shining brightly through the windows. Mae had left already. He was surprised because he had expected to leave with her.

He folded the blanket, placed it on the table and the cushions back on the couch, then went to pick up his stuff to leave.
On the fridge he found was a note which hadn't been there yesterday.

"Stay as long as you like. Eat something" it said in energetic, curvy handwriting.

He left. Mae was too nice.

  1. This was hilarious. Although Mae is dangerously careless. Parading around a stranger in her undies is asking for a trouble. Any other man would consider it a teasing and an invitation to take advantage of her. She's sending a wrong message, imo. Also at her age I was much shyer, wouldn't let a guy see me like that if I could avoid it. Not even if I liked him. XD

    1. Well, for once, she still thinks he's gay... but yeah, she's too careless!

  2. Ahh, the careless nonchalance of a sleepy and inexperienced young woman; maybe she keeps a gun tucked I to those tiny strawberry skivvies? O.o
    Switchblade at least!

She is fortunate that our Franny isn't the molesting type tho; bless her!

    1. She should! But who knows, so far she didn't had a reason to pull them out! :D

Well, Franny had his own share of molesting, poor thing :c Also maybe he's just not into strawberry skivvies (yet!) :D

  3. Ah we learned something new about Franco, he has sisters. I wonder if we will ever meet any of them in the future.

I had to have a laugh at this one because Mae sleeps like my sister and my daughter. However she surprised me striping down to her undies right in front of Franco like that. From what I have seen of Mae I thought she was a more modest type person who wouldn't shed her clothes unless she was intimately involved with someone. At this point in time she isn't involved with him yet so this was something I never would have guessed she would do.

    1. We might! c:

To Mae, Franco's just "one of the girls", since she considers him gay, plus the sleepiness... xD
But she's not a shy one, for sure.

  4. She’s totally fine with him because she sees him as non threatening. Watch out Mae...what a surprise you have in store.

  5. Mae's confidence/cluelessness in front of Franco better equal a very open talk about menstruating just because I want to see the look on his face. :P

  6. There are different types of people, but personally, I would wait to change until IN the bathroom even if Franco had been a woman. It's fine with friends but she literally doesn't know him. I mean.
She is very bold and that is a great trait, but it can be dangerous in combination with her already known naivety.

    1. I guess most people would wait until inside the bathroom! xD
But not Mae, being shy is a concept she doesn't know of

  7. Oh, he only planned to stay one night? And Mae's sleeping posture is lol Actually her entire demeanor here is LOL. She's too laid back about this. She's never felt unsafe before hasn't she? If she can drop her clothes like that without a care in the world. That's wonderful. That's almost an ideal world. She's very very green.

    1. Yeah he doesn't want to owe her anything. He's learned that everything has a price and he feels like he has nothing he could give back.
As for Mae, she's a bit sleep drowsy and also thinks now he's gay so she doesn't worry too much 😂

  8. Lol her sleeping did make me laugh! But my word, she just continues to be way too reckless for her own good. Now we can add parading herself in front of a random dude semi-naked, sure she thinks he's gay, but man she needs to develop some sense of self-preservation. Though I suppose if he was gonna strangle her in her sleep he would have done it already... still.

Like Fran says, she's too nice (good on him that he's not taking advantage of her even though that's the behaviour he's been conditioned to mirror - I like him. Then again, maybe it's because he subconsciously looks for people that will hurt him.)

Either way, I'm sure this is not the last they've seen of each other 😊

    1. Yeah I guess that were exactly her thoughts - if he'd want to kill me, he'd did so already 😂😂
Franny's still hesitant to just accept kindness. He has learned the hard way that he will have to pay for it eventually, and even though he feels Mae is different, he can't help but be careful.

Ofc it is not, she knows where she can find him 😉
