A haunting past
13.6 Linda West
Summer 1997, West residence
This Saturday morning the sun shone warm in the garden, so Linda and Mae decided to breakfast outside.
"What's wrong?", Linda asked.
She had watched Mae picking uncomfortably in her buttered toast for a while now.
Linda almost wanted to apologize that she hadn't made pancakes today, when her sister finally talked.
"I had a bad dream...", Mae started. "Remember last week when we went to that fortune teller?"
Linda did. How could she forget that hilarious woman?
"I dreamt I was marrying Herbert... and in the middle of the ceremony, she appeared between us, and spit fire...", Mae continued.
Now this sounded funny, Linda thought.
"...and then she was laughing madly, and saying that he's not my love fate!"
Oh my.
"... you're still worried about that nonsense?", Linda asked her.
"I am!", Mae confirmed, visibly agitated.
Linda took a deep breath.
When her sister had a fixation on something, it was hard to get her out of it.
"Don't be!", Linda said calmly. "You said it yourself, he's the only man you ever wanted to marry, no?"
"Yes, you're right!", Mae confirmed. She seemed to have found her confidence back.
That was easier than Linda expected.
"Linda?", Mae started again.
"Yes?"
Linda just hoped it wasn't about fire spitting fortune tellers anymore.
"I know, you're my older sister so... I'm not mad if you don't want it, but... ", Mae started hesitantly.
"Can I wear grandma's wedding dress? It would be like a lucky charm... ", Mae asked, having an almost guilty look on her face.
This was better. This still contained weird nonsense, but it still was better.
"Of course you can...", Linda said.
If it would help Mae get over her worries, she could have worn Linda's lab coat.
"Thank you! You're the best!", Mae said.
She definitely seemed calmer now.
This was a funny conversation. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Mae's totally justified worries amuse you :D
DeleteI had so much fun to write this! xD
It sounds like Mae's sub conscious is trying to send her a message. A message she already knows but won't admit to herself. Don't go through with this marriage. She does indeed still have feelings for someone else so she is not going into this marriage the way she should. To make matters worse if this marriage fails not only will it hurt Herbert but it will also break Mariella's heart too. In this case she is not marrying just a man but a family. Mariella has already bonded with her and if she loses Mae it will be like losing another mother.
ReplyDeleteShe definitely has more doubts than she should have to get married. And she really should listen to them, to avoid a possible terrible mistake.
DeleteOh Mae, are you having doubts?
ReplyDeleteIt's like she's desperate for confirmation she's doing the right thing :o
She has the feeling she might not have thought things through well enough, but now it's too late to back out!
DeleteI hope just the pre wedding jitters. And everything will be good... because that little girl has already bonded with her.
ReplyDeleteMae and Marie have a special connection c:
DeleteShe could've worn the lab coat? That made me chuckle. I hope these pre-wedding jitters settle down.
ReplyDeleteLinda would do anything for Mae to feel better. Even if it means unconventional dressing xD
DeleteShe SHOULD wear the lab coat! It would be unique. Unforgettable.
ReplyDeleteHA! wouldn't that be great?
DeleteTho I bet that would be rather Linda's style. Including safety glasses with scratches and rubber gloves xD
Oh wow. The fortune teller spitting fire. Where do you come up with these hilarious ideas XD
ReplyDeleteAsk Mae 😂
DeleteMae is definitely not looking like a blushing bride eager to start with the next stage of her life. You don't need a fortune teller, girl. Just listen to what your subconscious is telling you...
ReplyDeleteShe should... but alas, she really wants that family.
